Having
worked in Corporate America for over 5 years now, I have to talk about
the hypocritical doctrine of, "Diversity". The idea here is
that a company should be made up of people from different backgrounds.
Supposedly hiring people from diverse backgrounds will promote new and
better ideas on how to run the company.
A)
I have several problems with this. For instance: I am a white male,
so the idea is, if we have too many white people on the team, then we
better hire a person of another color or we might run out of good ideas
(as if all white people thought exactly alike). The reverse is also
true of course.
B)
Another problem with this ideology: When you give preferential treatment
to one race, you AUTOMATICALLY EXCLUDE THE OTHER. Lets say a boss says
to himself, "I have too many black people on my team, I need to
hire some whites so I can have a diverse team". Now lets pretend
that 6 people apply for the new position. Out of the 6 applicants, 5
are black, 1 is white. Who gets the job? Well, if the managers only
criteria is diversity, then the 5 black folk just wasted their time
by applying. I mean, what good did it do? Let's say the other 5 black
gentlemen were ALL more highly qualified? How would you feel if that
happened to you? Could anyone possibly believe that this is fair?
C)
Yet another issue: What kind of Diversity are we talking about here?
Are we going for Race Diversity? Religious Diversity? Color Diversity?
Do we need people of different "sexual preferences"? Do we
need to make sure our next hire is from another country? Or, are we
going for a mixture of, "all of the above"? Doesn't hiring
by criteria such as these eliminate possibly better candidates? Isn't
hiring by such criteria BIGOTED? What happened to, "hire the best
man"? I notice companies are very vague many time about what they
mean when they use the word "diversity".
Well,
if we are hiring according to color diversity.. then we need a black,
a white, a yellow, a red... but wait a minute... how does a different
color, just a persons color, ensure that they are the best candidate
for the job?
What
if we are hiring according to religious diversity.. better be fair..
can't have too many Christians, we need to hire a Muslim.. and then
an Atheist, but we can't leave out the Satanist!
I hope
you are getting the point; again, when you give preferential treatment
to one group of people, you AUTOMATICALLY EXCLUDE ALL OTHERS. I just
can't understand how that makes since.
Finally,
I understand why such things as Diversity exist. I understand that because
of the racism that once existed such things came about in order to create
a "fairer environment"; however, I hope you can see that shooting
for a "diverse" company or business, instead of the BEST one
is just as bigoted. A bigoted man needs a change of heart and new rules
won't change the heart... only Jesus Christ can.
